Sozopol is situated on two picturesque peninsulas, on the southern shore of the big gulf of Burgas. It is 21 miles to the south-eastern direction of Burgas, 260 miles from Sofia and 2 miles north-east of the International road /E-87/ for the Republic of Turkey. Its residents numbering about 5000 are friendly and hospitable and their main lifestyle and occupation is tourism and fishing. It is the oldest town across Bulgaria, which had originated more than 2600 years ago with rich history and archeological and cultural-historical monuments preserved up to date. The town is provisionally divided in two parts – Old Town and Harmanite district. As understood from its name, the Old Town is the historical and cultural center of Sozopol – with unique architecture and distinctive romantic atmosphere. The town has been established along the coast to the South and thus the district had been formed, known also as the New Town. This is the place where the bigger hotels, family boarding houses as well as a great part of the open-area summer bars and discotheques can be found. As a natural extension of the town, to the South, located on the other peninsula in Budzhaka area starts the establishment of Sozopol villa area where in the last 2-3 years modern and nice buildings have been built – villas, houses or apartment-hotels with swimming-pools and green parks meeting the contemporary tourist requirements. The natural characteristics of the town of Sozopol and its appertaining region presupposes good possibilities for recreative tourism, as the suitable beach strip and sea water with recreative potential are used. The active tourist season is limited by the climate conditions within the summer months. The climate of the Southern Bulgarian Black Sea is of Mediterranean type with long and warm summer and mild autumn. The average air temperature in the summer months varies between 24 to 29 degrees Centigrade, and the temperature of water is 19-26 degrees, which guarantees between 8 to 11 summer hours daily. All this makes the region of Sozopol one of the sunniest in Bulgaria and provides a possibility for sunny and sea baths from May to October. The air temperatures rarely pass 30 degrees, there are no great temperatures amplitudes and the light sea breeze in the late afternoon makes the air even fresher and the nights cool. The sea is warm and safe – there are no dangerous fish and sea animals. It is a slightly salty sea, with average salt content of water 16-18 °/oo. The advantages of the region are: the available tourist infrastructure; the historic and archeological heritage of the town of Sozopol; the unique coastline; the islands just next to the coastline; the diverse vegetation, as well as the second important sand dunes in Bulgaria; the gained reputation of the resort and holiday settlement around the town of Sozopol, as well as the Festival of Arts Apollonia that are of national significance now. In Sozopol aquatory is found also the biggest island on the Bulgarian coast "St. Ivan" /260 dca/, as well as "the underwater forest" - phytolith of century-old cedar trees, which had sunk approximately 70 million years ago. The sea and climate conditions make Sozopol coast extremely attractive and preferred for family recreation and holiday.
