In the 1980s, it became one of the leading countries that produced personal computers, ranking on top in Europe in terms of IT-certified specialists per capita and eighth in the world in terms of total ICT professionals, surpassing other highly populated and influential countries.

In 2001, Bulgaria's telecommunications rapidly grew and even extended its coverage to the fullest. In 2006 and onwards, large multinational computer companies put up its centres and headquarters in the country.

Additionally, Bulgaria was the first in Europe that set up a national nanotechnology research and development centre.
